PermitSafe was not built by a software company that saw a market opportunity. It was built by a CDL driver who got tired of digging through a permit binder on the side of the road.
It started with a routine roadside inspection. The officer asked for the oversize permit. The driver dug through the binder. Pages everywhere. Wrong permit, wrong truck. The right document was back at the office — in a different binder, in a filing cabinet nobody had touched in weeks.
It was a preventable violation. The permit existed. It was valid. It just was not in the right place at the right time. That is the kind of thing that costs real money and real time — and it happens to fleets of every size, every day.
The problem is not that fleet managers are disorganized. It is that the entire system was designed around paper — binders, filing cabinets, printed copies. When insurance renews, someone prints forty copies and drives to every truck. When a permit expires, it lapses because the reminder was on a sticky note that fell off a monitor.
And the software that existed to solve this was built for the office, not for the driver on the side of I-80 at 11pm. Complex apps, logins, driver accounts. Officers who had to download something just to see a document. Per-driver pricing that made the bill go up every time the roster changed.
